Day 16 - Casa Grande Ruins National Monument

Coffee and a shower to start the day off. We have mixed cloud and sun with light 10 kt winds blowing from the northeast. Not too bad after the heavy rains yesterday afternoon and into the evening. It’s strange to see how the ground dries out so quickly the next day!

Our hummingbird feeder has been very popular as we have watched the liquid slowly dwindle with each visit. They are not shy at all.

In November of 2019, I purchased a couple Mopeka Propane sensors for the tanks but have recently had an issue with one of them. It seems to draw down the battery in about two hours and then stops transmitting via Bluetooth. They were both working fine up until a week ago but my troubleshooting proved fruitless. I contacted the company, explaining the situation, and they are sending a new unit as I type this. Great service and if all goes well, I will have it replaced when Kelly returns from her trip home at the end of the month.

I also managed to register for three RC contests that are coming up in both Arizona and California over the next month. The Superstition Classic in Mesa, AZ on the 22nd & 23rd, the Annual Desert Classic the following weekend on Feb 29th & March 1st and then the Harry Gould PA Contest in Hemet, CA on March 13th & 14th. This will get me started into the contest season early!  I am also considering the Orange County Contest in Arvin on April 4th & 5th… but that will depend on our “travel” plans later in March.

Still working with T-Mobile to get my iPad sorted out… should have a resolution shortly.

I made breakfast this morning and after a quick tidy up, we headed northwest on HWY 10 to HWY 87 and the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument. It was only a 35 minute drive and is actually the route we will take going up to Phoenix tomorrow with the RV. Once north of Coolidge we took a left into the site. Super easy drive… two turns once on the highway :-)

It is an very famous archaeological site (turned into a National monument in 1892) dating back to the 13th century. You can read about it here

We spent some time wandering through the display building then walked around the area. We then watch a 15 minute video on the history and the life that the people led back then. All very interesting and a very high quality exhibit. Highly recommended.

We stopped at Safeway for a couple things (see another trend here?) then topped up the truck with diesel. Thirty five minutes later we were back at the RV enjoying the rest of a relaxing day.

Kelly had picked up a Mac's Field Guide to cactus so we decided to take a walk around the park and identify as many types of cactus as we could... so here is your cactus lesson for the day.

Saguaro Cactus
Clock-face Prickly Pear Cactus
Cockscomb Hedgehog Cactus
Fishhook Barrel Cactus
Teddy Bear Cholla
Tree Cholla
Dave Cholla... Ouch!!!! These things will not let go!
This will definitely help with the "wound" recovery! :-)
After the walkabout, we relaxed on our desert patio and enjoyed the fading sun... then went in once it stopped sending us the warm rays! It gets cold fast!

With the cloud cover it is possible we may get a good sunset... we will see...

Dinner tonight is Thai Meatballs with rice & veggies. Master Chef Kelly is on duty tonight. I am on dishwasher duty. A short walk around the loop then a bit of TV before bed. Tomorrow we move to the Arizonian RV Park for a week.
